Get the tropical trend in your home

The tropical trend in interiors shows no signs of slowing in this Spring and Summer’s homeware collections. Here's how to get the look in your home and discover our pick of favourite products.

"What is the tropical trend?"

Not for the faint hearted, the tropical trend features bold colours, botanical and animal prints plus a good helping of retro chic. The last time that the tropical trend took hold of our homes in the UK was in the 1970’s. Bamboo wallpapers and rattan chairs were the style icons of the day and today’s trend definitely shows influences from the era.

Modern tropical takes its cues from far flung holidays in glamorous hotels and beach villas styled from days gone by. Rustic style furniture in natural materials such as rattan and bamboo is paired with deep filled cushions in a riot of jungle colours. Gold accessories finish the look. Vases, mirrors and dinner ware feature jungle motifs including pineapples, parrots, palm trees and cheese plants.

"So where do I start?"

Wallpapers and textiles are the best place to start with getting the look. Bold prints will fill a room with colour. Choosing and layering pattern and colour, however can be daunting if it's not your usual design style. If you’re not a fan of large scale print use plain colour instead. Emerald, lime green, coral, peach and raspberry pink are good starting points.

"Yikes, I'm scared... all that pattern and colour?"

If you prefer to keep it neutral, focus on furniture instead. Teak loungers, day beds, bergere and club chairs inspired by colonial hill stations and villas. Team these with plantation shutters and keep print for framed pieces on the wall.

Still not sure? The conservatory is an ideal place for the tropical trend. A natural habitat for rattan chairs and large plants. Colour comes naturally from the large windows bringing the outside in. A few simple accessories such as cushions, mirrors or lamps will be all you need.
