The Egg, The Swan and The Drop - Arne Jacobsen Limited Editions

limited edition Arne Jacobsen Chairs

A little while ago I featured a post on the blog all about iconic dining chairs. As I was researching that post it struck me what a huge impact the mid century modern designs have had. Interior fashions may come and go but their enduring style of clean modern design has stuck with home lovers and interior designers for many years now.

I do love a statement chair. So I was excited to hear that the timeless designs of one of the most iconic designers of them all Arne Jacobsen are being re-imagined for a celebration 60th anniversary edition.

The Chairs

The Egg, The Swan and The Drop. These are no ordinary chairs but three of the most iconic chairs ever designed.

The chairs were designed for the SAS Royal in Copenhagen (also celebrating it’s 60th anniversary) often considered the world’s first design hotel where everything from the building down to ashtrays, door knobs and cutlery was designed by Jacobsen. Whilst the building is a stark and modernist tower by contrast the chairs with their curves and more organic forms are an attempt to soften the harsh architecture.

Loved by interior designers these mid-century chairs have since found their way into homes hotels and restaurants all over the world.

To mark the 60th anniversary, Fritz Hansen have reimagined the trio of global icons in an exclusive selection of materials which hold a pure and natural colour palette in respect to Arne Jacobsen

“The starting point for the collection was the serenity of nature. The idea was to unite renowned heritage with designs that remain relevant in time. The result is a collection of furniture and accessories that appeal to all senses and turn pure materials into personal design objects,” says Christian Andresen, Head of Design at Fritz Hansen.

The Swan and the Egg Chairs are works of art. Statement chairs which look as good as they feel to sit in. T

heir sculptural curves wrap around you as you relax in them. The family resemblance to the popular Series 7 dining chair is striking through the designs.

Both the Swan and the Egg chair are upholstered in beautiful pure leather in a lovely natural blush tone. Never dyed, it maintains it’s natural grain and soft touch along with tiny insect bites and scars natural to the leather hides. Over time the leather will darken and obtain a more vintage look making each piece unique.

The Drop chair was originally produced in a very limited number exclusively for the SAS Royal Hotel. This explains why they are not as commonly seen as the Swan and the Egg chairs although no less beautiful. The chair was placed at the hotel snack bar as well as in guest rooms near the dressing tables.

The anniversary Drop Chair is upholstered in a Taupe coloured durable and highly resistant wool blend fabric which makes it perfect as a dining chair.

All three chairs also feature 23 Carat gold plating also designed to age with beauty over time.

So how can you get hold of one of these beauties? Well I think you’d better be quick. The original pieces are highly sought after collectors items and these look set to become future heirlooms too.
