Colour of the year 2023

The trend we’re seeing when we start looking at the colour of the year 2023, is that we’re craving a fresh start with deep and vibrant hues that look to the future. We are looking for subtle and soothing shades of blues, purples and green too, to make our homes feel like cosy retreats from the past few years.

Farrow and Ball - Stirabout

Each fall, paint companies and interior design experts predict the colours that will shape our homes for the coming year. While the hues of 2022 centred around getting the back-to-nature shades of green and neutrals, 2023 is all about self-expression. Now that all paint manufacturers have announced their colours for the year 2023, we can see some clear trends in current colours.

Pantone has chosen a lavender blue for their colour of the year. Sherwin-Williams and Dulux have named warm neutral colours which are inspired by the natural world for their colours of the year 2023. The colours are wonderfully natural and soothing hues that can be used in any room in the home and gives an enveloping feeling of calm.

Pantone

Rather than picking a colour of the year from its existing, extensive palette of shades, Pantone created an entirely new shade for 2023. The warm, cheerful hue of Digital Lavendar is meant to inspire curiosity and creativity, symbolizing the transition out of the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sherwin-Williams

Sherwin-Williams chose the subtly soothing and minimal Redend point as their color of the year. The warm earthy tone is a departure from the cool neutrals and bright jewel tones that have dominated the colour trends so far with them. The Redend point and its coordinating pallet are all about moving forward and looking ahead, instead of back to our past.

Farrow and Ball

Farrow and Ball have released 11 new colours for 2023. These colours are inviting shades that will give your home a cosy look. These include Bamboozle - a spirited flame red which works in any light. Beverly - clean mid green which is dependable and uncomplicated and Stirabout - inspired by the nurturing porridge, an earthy tone with just a hint of underlying grey, it’s perfect for creating a relaxed feel, which will never be too cold. The entire collection is inspired by moments of joy, comfort and refreshment and has Farrow and Balls signature richness, depth and extraordinary response to light.

Dulux

The shade for Dulux in 2023 is Wild Wonder – a positive and glowing tone that was also inspired by the natural world. This is teamed with four colour pallets to create an entire look for your home. These include: Lush colours, Buzz colours, Raw colours and finally Flow colours. Some pallets are more earthy than others, some seem to be more inspired by the ocean or water - but each pallet has a natural and calming undertone to it.

Valspar

Valspar has selected 12 livable paint colours, including soft neutrals, sweet pastels, and soothing shades of blue and green for their colours of the year 2023. Soft shades of pink and purple, including Gentle Violet and Southern Road, add a sophisticated yet subtle colour to your walls, where-as rich, restorative blues and greens, like Flora and Everglade Deck and a depth and cosiness which also pairs well with natural woods.

Graham and Brown

Going a little darker, Graham and Brown have introduced Alizarin as their colour of the year. This deep and moody yet refreshingly warm colour is an auburn shade of red and was created to make your space feel inviting and cosy.

I think this has all given us a very clear picture of what 2023 is going to look like in our homes and the sort of pallets we are likely to see. We look forward to seeing if the predictions are right and getting some of these pallets into our interior design.
