4 Ways to bring Autumn Style into your Home

Autumn is the season of the harvest, full of colour and light. This is a time of the year to make the most of rich colours and textures of the season. We’ll soon be spending most of our time indoors sheltering from the weather. Before that bring some Autumn style into your home by bringing in elements of the season’s rich colours, earthy textures and influences of the abundance of nature’s harvest.

1. Use the colours of Autumn style

Colours take on a darker but warmer tone this season. A darker palette with accents colours of the seasons. Warm golds, pinks, reds and browns. Last week’s blog was all about the Pantone colour predictionstaken from New York and London Fashion Week. Blush pinks, rich reds, soft browns and tan colours featured in both palettes. Along with some contrasting shades of purple and blue.

In addition last week Pantone announced the release of the a shade of purple in honour of musician Prince called Love Shade #2. Purple is the ultimate Autumn colour. A rich shade of nature which complements perfectly the yellows, oranges and browns which conjure up the colours of the season.

Shades of deep blues are featuring in strongly in interiors for AW 2017 and it’s easy to see how they conjure up the cosy feelings of Autumn days.

2. Get ready to make your fireplace the star of the show.

The darker wall colours of this bathroom help with making the warmth and brightness of the fireplace the focus of the room. The open fire and firewood on display bring nature and warmth into the home. For similar paint colours to the two blue rooms shown here try Farrow and Ball’s ‘Stiff Key Blue’ or Zoffany Paint’s ‘Prussian’.

In the room below the rich wooden furniture and warm colours of the mantelpiece display contrast against the blue walls to bring in a feeling of warmth and cosiness into the room. Even though the fireplace isn't working, the display of logs and warmth of the candles gives a feeling of warmth in the room. Painting walls is time consuming. The quickest and easiest way to add colour to your home is with accessories.

3. Get layering for Autumn Style

Layering with rugs, throws, cushions and accessories creates a cosy room. The mantelpiece display is full of warm golden colours. Layering blankets and cushions on the sofa for colour and contrast. As well as this the coffee table display is warm and bright too. What’s more these can be changed with the seasons to update your look. In summer light cottons in bright colours make a great seasonal update to chunky knits, wool and faux fur throws.

As well as layering accessories such as blankets, cushions and ornaments consider lighting. Moving away from main lighting to lamps and task lighting brings a warm glow to a room.

4. Put the season's rich harvest on display

Get green fingered and bring the outside in with seasonal displays of flowers, fruits and greenery. There is so much inspiration around at this time of the year. Try a simple display of apples or pears early in the season.

Pumpkins and squashes provide a source of colour for table displays and mantelpieces. Adding berries and fruits to floral displays creates a rich still life of colour and shape.

Nowadays we can get fresh flowers all year round. Traditionally dried flower arrangements would be popular at this time of year as the flowers of the season faded. Try twigs and berries as an alternative to fresh flower displays.
