Whilst it’s impossible to predict the future there are a few useful tools that interior designers can use to gain insights on what’s trending for homeowners. Pinterest is one of the best. Previously on the blog I tipped Pinterest as one of the go to apps for interior design inspiration. Popular pins driven by growing search numbers are a great indication of what clients will be asking for in the coming season.
For the fourth year running Pinterest have published their end of year survey of emerging trends for the year ahead. Since people use Pinterest as research tool for shopping, analysing trends gives an early insight into consumer behavior.
The predictions come from looking at topics which grew at least 50% as well as showing an upward trend towards the end of the year. With over 14 billion ideas, the home category saw a whopping 75% increase in Pins year on year. Having analysed the category from full refurbishments to small accent pieces here’s what Pinterest is tipping to be big in 2018.
Resort-inspired style

Maybe it’s because we’re all longing for a holiday that spa inspired bathrooms - which coincidentally I named in my Top 5 Bathroom trends for 2018 - and rattan furniture for that laid back tropical style are on the up. Searches on Spa inspired bathrooms are up 269%
Mixed Metallics

Metallic finishes mesh with nearly any colour palette and bronze, copper, gold and rose gold were all popular accents in furniture, accessories and finishes in 2017. No wonder there was a 423% increase is saves for mixed metals.
Terrazzo
Not seen much since the 1970s terrazzo has made a reappearance on the interiors scene and consumers clearly want more. Pins about terrazzo have seen an increase of 316%
The fifth wall
Saves for statement ceilings were up by 310%. These include everything from adding pattern and colour with paint and wallpaper to texture such as mouldings. Things are looking up!
Bone Inlay

Geometric patterns inlaid into furniture fit in with the bohemian vibe of found decor. Saves for bone inlay are up 207%
Herringbone Patterns
I’m glad this traditional pattern is making a comeback with an increase in saves of 131%. I’ve always been a fan of a classic herringbone wooden floor. Using the pattern on walls is a versatile way to add dimension and make any space more modern.

Statement doors
Searches for colourful doors are up 121%. Take a look at our blog for some quick tips on How to improve the front of your home.
Patterned plants
2014 was a year for small succulents and now it seems as if plants are getting bigger and better. Searches for patterned plants are up a massive 533% and reveal vibrant patterned foliage and splashes of colour.
Wall art is big
Bye bye blank space. Large posters, works of art and photography prints are filling walls. Saves for big wall art show one of the highest increases the home category by 637%.
Go green
Sage is the new neutral. Saves for the colour Sage are 170% up. A quick way to get the look is to add some beautiful new accessories accessories like these.
