Deepti's Dream Home - Creating Space with Contemporary Style

Welcome to another Create Perfect House We love working with all kinds of homes old and new. Whilst our last house tour saw the transformation of a Victorian terrace this time it's a modern detached home.

Adding space for functional family living was the brief to create client Deepti's dream family home at this detached house project in Harrow. The existing two bedroom house was extended to provide more family space downstairs with a large extension to house a sleek modern kitchen with dining and seating area. Also on the ground floor changes to the original layout create space for a downstairs guest bedroom and a cinema/living room. Additionally, upstairs a loft extension provides space for a fourth bedroom with en-suite bathroom.

Open Plan Living in the Kitchen Diner

The downstairs extension creates a large open plan room. The layout plan for the new extension included zoning the room into kitchen prep, storage, dining and an area for relaxing on the sofa in front of the TV.

Whilst creating such a large room it is essential to keep it light and bright. Large picture windows along with bi-fold doors which open out the to garden let in masses of light and give the feeling of letting the outside in.

Meanwhile the kitchen area itself is further flooded with light by roof lights situated above the island.

The family like contemporary style and this is reflected in their choice of kitchen. The flooring is polished white marble effect tiles from walls and floors, a large format of 750 x 750 gives a seamless look with less grout lines.

Sleek cashmere colour handleless kitchen cabinets are the choice for complimenting the floor, with additional storage in an off-white to give it some individuality and zoning through into the dining area.

This is teamed with a walnut wood island and Corian countertops to create a two tone kitchen. With the sink and appliances situated on the wall facing units, the island provides additional prep and storage space and room for the three seats which are great for this social family.

The wall units continue along the whole of the back wall of the kitchen to provide the storage for the dining area. A mirrored alcove reflects light from the huge windows opposite the dining table.

The dining furniture continues the contemporary theme with an elegant walnut and glass table from Natuzzi and timeless classic upholstered chairs from Calligaris. The light above the dining table from The Lighting Company adds a touch of glamour with lots of shimmering crystals.

The Cinema Room

Adjacent to this room is the media room with a large automated screen where the family can relax and watch films. This is connected to the kitchen area with an internal Critall window which was really a ‘must have’ for this client (who wouldn’t want one hey?).

This lets the light from the kitchen flood in whilst a made to measure blind is fitted in the media room to keep it dark for film nights.

New Bedrooms and Bathrooms

Upstairs in the new loft room we created a comfortable bedroom with en-suite for one of the daughters.

The custom-built space saving storage was a great hit and makes the most of difficult spaces under the eaves. The new pull out drawers create space which would otherwise be unused.

In all the bedrooms the existing furniture was used and planned into the layout of the rooms. The walls were painted in combination of warm neutrals.

In the guest bedroom (pictured above) on the ground floor we also added a great feature wall using this Linwood wallpaper – Labyrinth in Sky. All roman blinds and curtains were custom design by us and created and fitted by the talented workroom at Hillary’s.

Within the new space downstairs, we also created an office and a family bathroom. The bathroom layout was carefully planned to make the most of this space.

The sink was positioned to perfectly fit the mirror between the windows. The shower door is a space-saving curve to allow for the large proportions of 1200 x 800. The mixed tiles from Walls and Floors are a clever design feature.

Whilst the large horizontal tiles elongate the space by drawing the eye through the room the smaller grey mosaic patterns along the wall add a feature for more interest.
