The Design Brief
Robyn came across Create Perfect interior design through google and contacted Gina via the website. The project began with an initial call to discuss the property and find out more about the owner’s lifestyle and their intentions for their new home. As a busy professional couple downsizing they wanted to put their own stamp on the main living areas. They both work long hours and away from home so Gina also needed to project manage and implement the designs too.
After a consultation at home with both Robyn, her partner and their lovely dog, Gina learnt more about their lifestyle as well as discussing furniture styles and colour palettes, coming away with lots of ideas to work on. The room layouts were the first thing to tackle in the project before moving on to design concepts.
They loved the concepts based on a fresh and natural palette using Wimborne White, a warm white from the Farrow and Ball range and deep greens in upholstery to bring the outdoors in and complement the couples love of mid-century furniture.
For Robyn one of the main issues to tackle in the house was the lack of usable storage. There were lots of storage cupboards and wardrobes but they were badly designed and even more badly constructed. So Gina’s first task was to redesign all the built in storage and include more wherever possible.
To maximise the usable storage space Gina increased the height of the hallway cupboards to utilise the full floor to ceiling space, creating even more space for coats and bags. A bespoke custom built under stair unit was specified, streamlined to fit with the rooms design and minimise its impact on the space. Customising storage to your needs creates space that works for your lifestyle. Bespoke features in the under stairs storage include a pull-out dog food drawer, as well as a space for hanging and plugging in a wall hung hoover unit and much more.
The Living Room Firstly let's look at the living and dining area. A tricky space due to its tight proportions. Gina and Robyn tested and changed their minds on so many sofas trying to find the perfect one for the space. It needed something that added the wow factor but also still fairly deep but not very wide to fit perfectly in the living room without encroaching into the space of the dining area.
The 3D designs for this space were pivotal in decision making. As well as allowing Robyn to visualise the furniture in the layout of the room before committing to furniture purchases, 3D designs bring together the colour palette across the whole room.
3D Living Room Design
Robyn originally specified a grey sofa, however on seeing the 3D designs a decision was made to bring in more colour, resulting in the beautiful deep red sofa from Swoon Editions who were also particularly helpful in sending a selection of footstools to choose to match the chairs.
In the dining area, with the exception of the lighting, the final choices stayed exactly as specified in the 3D designs. A feature wall with Farrow and Ball Lotus wallpaper and a continuing theme with a classic mid-century dining chair.
3D Dining Room Design
For storage Gina added floor to ceiling units either side of the new wood burner. This allowed for a media system, wood storage and display of pictures and home accessories.
For the windows half cafe shutters were added for privacy which were teamed with some beautiful hand made linen curtains made by our curtain maker Jude who always does a smashing job!
We love to source sustainably wherever we can and in keeping with the mid-century modern style Gina sourced this cabinet from Vinterior which specialises in antique and vintage furniture. The vintage telephone is also in keeping with the theme.
The Home Office
Another room designed by Gina in this project is the home office. In this room there’s clean lines and fresh white paint to create a calm environment to work. Shelving to store books and a practical desk which perfectly fitted the space to provide a workspace and organise all those office essentials.
As well as a home office, the room can also now be utilised as a spare room which the homeowners are pleased to have in their new home.
With the carefully chosen sofa bed the room transforms with ease into a fresh and relaxing guest space with chest of drawers, comfy bed and plenty of greenery for restful night’s sleep.
The Bedroom
Again in the bedroom there was a need to add more storage space so a large bespoke wardrobe unit was specified, running the whole length of the main bedroom wall. It provides ample storage and makes use of the chimney breast which is unused and without a working fireplace.
Another challenge in the bedroom was the curtains. Due to the storage the most practical place for the radiator was to position it under the window. With this in mind curtains weren’t an option. Instead I chose shutters opting for tier on tier shutters from Hillary's so as to not interfere with the wardrobes. Downstairs in the living room, to create a consistent view from outside and for added privacy we also specified shutters.
The colour palette for the bedroom continues with the theme of natural elements. The white of the walls is the Little Greene Paint Company's Slaked Lime and contrasts beautifully with the warm wood floors and the feature wall which is the deep rich green of Valspar paint's Nordic Forest bringing elements of nature into the room to create a cosy bedroom haven.
The rustic bedside tables are complemented with sleek mid-century style lamps and Gina continued the theme of gold accents around the house with the picture frames and hanging planters.
Adjoining the bedroom is a small en suite bathroom.
White walls continue in the en suite to make the most of the light. However there is added character to the room with the beautifully patterned floor tiles. Storage can often be an issue with small bathrooms so in this one there is an under sink vanity unit as well as shelves above the toilet to make the most of the space.
The installation went smoothly with the built-in furniture first to be installed and painted. Once this was dry Gina arrived with the rest of the install team. The three room installation was completed in two days. On the first day the other furniture was built and installed in situ. Pictures were put up and plants and other accessories arranged around the home.
The team are all over the moon with the result of this project and as usual everyone involved worked very hard until the end of the day to complete the job. We were pleased to hear the clients comment "it all looks superb, we love it. You have done a fantastic job"
